Of all the cities in all the world, Milan and Rome are two of the top five fashion cities; and last year, Milan became the top city for fashion, beating out New York City that has held the title for the previous five years. Leading Italian fashion houses Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Prada, Valentino, and Versace are either headquartered or have a flagship store in Milan. Fashion Week is held twice a year in each city.

Italy is a land of festivals, but in February, the festivals in celebration of Lent may exceed those of any other country.
Carnevale in Venice is known worldwide for its exquisite costumes, elaborate balls, and themed festivals. The festivities usually start the weekend two weeks before Lent and end the Tuesday before Lent on Martedi Grasso, Fat Tuesday. This year the theme was “6 Senses for 6 Sestieri (areas)” and ended February 16th, but you can still attend the Costume Ball on February 24th at Hotel Danieli if you have some extra time and money ($608 per person—just for the Ball)....

In March 1909, Giuseppe Petrosino, a New York City detective, was murdered in Palermo, Sicily. Born in Padula (region of Campania) in 1860, Petrosino immigrated to New York with his family in 1873. He joined the NYPD in 1883 and within two years was promoted to detective.

Italian sports fans were surely disappointed to watch the poor performance of the 2006 World Cup Champions, especially in their loss to Slovakia. Four years ago, when Italy defended its title against France, wide screen televisions broadcast the game to attendees at the food show in the Jacob Javits Center in New York City. When Italy won, the Italians who were attending the food show paraded through the aisles of food vendors, carrying flags of Italy—from hand held miniatures to blanket-size wrapped around bodies—and singing the Italian national anthem.

The 2010 vacation season may be coming to an end, but it’s never too late to tour Italy. Italia, the website of the Italian Government Tourist Board, can provide hours of Italian enjoyment, entertainment, beauty, and information, with just a few clicks of the mouse. You can learn about Montepulciano’s Bravio delle Botti, a wine barrel rolling contest that ended August 29th, but has been ongoing for four centuries, so you can make plans to attend next year.

Italian Trade Commission in New York about Eataly. Eataly, founded by Oscar Farinetti, is a food and wine megastore with fresh food markets, a bakery, butcher, specialty Italian food products, a wine bar, wood-burning stoves, restaurants, and a cooking school, among many other offerings.

On October 14th, the White House issued a Presidential Proclamation acknowledging October as Italian American Heritage and Culture Month. While New Jersey and other states with high populations of Italian Americans have passed a law for an annual proclamation, the federal government must issue a proclamation each year.

 In America, the season of feasts and celebrations has begun, but in Italy, numerous festivals are held throughout the year. Almost every town – from the smallest village to the largest city – has a Patron Saint, and with festivities commemorating history, people, culture, wine, food, and folklore, it’s possible that somewhere in Italy, a festival happens every day.
